Information on the Fuel/Oil/Enviro Fee
May 2005
Effective May 1st, your fee for waste services will include a fuel/oil/enviro fee. Given the extraordinary volatility surrounding fuel/oil prices nationwide, combined with the fact that fuel/oil is a significant portion of the investment we make every day to provide you with outstanding waste services, this surcharge allows us to keep up with the cost of meeting that obligation to you.
Here are answers to some questions you may have.
How will you calculate the fuel/oil/enviro fee?
We use an index-based fee that will be adjusted monthly. The fee is based on the Regional U.S. Average On-Highway Diesel Fuel Prices reported by the U.S. Department of Energy (this index is highly correlated with other major fuel price indices worldwide; for your ongoing reference, it can be downloaded at this address:
Is this a fixed fee, or will it be adjusted?
As you can see from the charts (PDF), the fee could be adjusted monthly, depending on the index, either up or down. Depending on the price of fuel, it is possible that the fuel/oil/enviro fee could be $0.00 in any given month.
How will I know how much my fee is? Will this be on my statement each month?
The fuel/oil/enviro fee will be broken out as a separate item on your statement each month, even in the event that the fee is $0.00
Are any other companies taking this step?
Given the rapid rise and uncertainty surrounding fuel prices recently, many other companies – UPS, FedEx and other transportation companies – have put sliding scale fuel fees in place. Virtually every business that serves its customers using vehicles of one sort or another, or transports material and goods by truck is affected by the economies of fuel prices.
