Reducing our Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Casella is committed to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with solid waste management. Since 2005, the company has surpassed its greenhouse gas reduction targets, reducing company-wide emissions by 45%.

The company demonstrated its commitment to fighting climate change as early as 2003. That year, Casella became the first solid waste and recycling services company in the nation to join the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Climate Leaders Program. This voluntary industry-government partnership ended in 2011, but Casella remains committed to measuring its carbon footprint each year and working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

To reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions, Casella has focused on:

• building landfill-gas-to-energy facilities to produce renewable electricity from landfill methane;
• improving the fuel efficiency and emissions of its fleet through alternative fuel vehicles and technology investments;
• deploying energy conservation programs at its facilities; and
• implementing best practices created by our dedicated team of employees.

Sustainability Metrics & Performance Indicators

We have carefully selected metrics that will help us gauge our ongoing performance in each area. Developing and tracking these metrics and performance indicators is key to developing our Sustainability Intelligence. Sustainability Intelligence is our capacity to continuously and effectively seek, capture, analyze, and share information and knowledge relevant to improving our operational and financial performance over time. Improving our Sustainability Intelligence is an important goal for our next reporting period.
