Landfills

For materials that cannot be renewed, our modern landfills are operated to provide safe and secure disposal in an environmentally sound manner. Every minute our landfills can capture over 8 million BTUs of gas for conversion into renewable energy.

Growing numbers of our customers are actively working to renew resources by Putting Waste to Work®. With a deep commitment to waste reduction and recycling, these customers are drastically reducing the discards that they need to dispose. Still, these customers and others continue to call upon us to provide safe, secure, and affordable disposal options with the smallest possible environmental footprint.

Casella is one of the largest landfill operators in the Northeast, safely managing the disposal of over 3 million tons of solid waste each year. Casella's network of transfer stations and landfill disposal sites are well positioned to service most major municipalities and communities across the region. We can also provide you with comprehensive transportation assistance and solidification services. We accept a wide range of materials, including:

  • Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)
  • Construction and Demolition (C&D) Debris
  • Special Waste (Ash Related Wastes, Gas Drilling Related Wastes, Contaminated Soil & Debris, Sludges & Related Wastes, Asbestos - Friable and Non-friable, Drill Cuttings, etc.)

Partnering for Success

Public-private partnership can have extensive benefits to host communities and Casella has effectively partnered with many municipalities to operate landfills, transfer stations and recycling facilities throughout the Northeast. These municipalities have found it advantageous to partner with a private waste and recycling company in order to keep costs down, increase recycling rates and best meet the needs of the community. Public-private partnerships can provide a multitude of host community benefits including:

Sustainable Environmental and Economic Development

Casella has differentiated itself in the marketplace by linking recycling and other leading-edge resource management approaches to the solid waste disposal needs of municipalities. We continually work with local and state governments to design, permit, and build environmentally sound landfill disposal facilities to meet the region's ever-increasing solid waste needs. We believe that it is important to provide our communities and our customers with in-market disposal options that eliminate the unnecessary environmental impacts of shipping waste to distant disposal sites.

Our SEED® (Sustainable Environmental and Economic Development) program was conceived of and implemented as a framework to manage disposal capacity in a responsible manner in which the interests of all stakeholders are aligned. Through our investment of time and capital to build a sustainable infrastructure around our disposal projects, we have shifted the value of these sites from merely disposal to platforms that include sustainable projects.

Today, our landfill gas collection systems are not merely designed to passively capture gas; these systems are designed to actively extract gas to power landfill gas-to-energy plants producing clean electricity and to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Within our model, landfill sites are environmental campuses where resources are extracted from all aspects of the waste stream.
