With the money from his high school jobs, Doug Casella bought a pickup truck and founded Casella's Refuse Removal in Rutland, Vermont. Later joined by his older brother, John, the brothers built the state's first recycling facility.
The brothers had a vision beyond trash pickup — one that viewed resource renewal as part of waste management. This vision helped them build an unparalleled recycling infrastructure throughout the northeastern U.S.
Trading of Casella stock began the day after one of the largest collapses in U.S. stock market history. Despite the economic conditions, the company's IPO became one of the most successful in industry history.
Casella led the industry into the 21st century by innovating for sustainability in an increasingly wasteful world. The company stayed true to its founding principle of transforming society's waste into new resources.
Casella extended its sustainability leadership to energy, continuing to advance landfill gas-to-energy facilities while also redirecting food residuals to simultaneously support local farms, produce biogas energy, and replenish agricultural soils.
