Landfill Gas-to-Energy
Every active Casella landfill captures and repurposes methane gas to generate clean electricity. Today, four active and one closed facility supply gas-to-energy plants that produce enough renewable power for about 30,000 homes each year—reducing emissions and helping communities rely less on fossil fuels. This process turns a once-wasted byproduct into a renewable energy source, supporting both circular economy and climate leadership objectives outlined in Casella’s 2030 sustainability goals.
Renewable Natural Gas
Casella is expanding its renewable natural gas production through partnerships that accelerate clean energy adoption. In collaboration with WAGA Energy, we’re developing RNG capacity at three landfill sites—expected to produce over 1.3 million MMBtu of renewable natural gas per year, enough to power more than 40,000 homes and businesses.
As this initiative scales, it will significantly reduce methane emissions and contribute to regional decarbonization—part of Casella’s broader commitment to sustainable operations and innovation.
Solar, Wind, and Geothermal
Beyond landfill gas and RNG, Casella supports a diverse portfolio of renewable energy projects—from on-site solar arrays and wind turbines to one of the industry’s first landfill geothermal systems. These projects help transform waste facilities into clean energy hubs that contribute power back to local grids.
These smaller-scale initiatives demonstrate Casella’s holistic approach to sustainability—advancing renewable energy innovation across every stage of the waste lifecycle.
