Aerosols
Do not put full or partially full aerosol cans in the trash or recycling; they may explode in the compactor truck and harm sanitation workers. Aerosol cans containing propellant are explosive if crushed or incinerated. Full or partially full aerosol cans should be disposed of at a Household Hazardous Waste event.
Ammunition
For information on how to properly dispose of ammunition and explosives, please contact your local Police Department or the Montgomery County Bomb Squad at 610-278-3343.
Asbestos
Asbestos is not accepted at county Household Hazardous Waste events or in your regular trash. Shingles, tiles, piping, and other materials containing asbestos should be removed only by a contractor who is licensed to do so. For a large quantity, you may try searching for ‘Asbestos Removal and Abatement Services’ or you may contact the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry at 717-771-3396 for a list of companies who are licensed to properly handle and remove the material.
Christmas Trees
Christmas trees should be composted or mulched like yard waste rather than sent to landfills or incinerators.
Many municipalities provide curbside Christmas tree collections as part of their yard waste collection program.
Clothing and Textiles
Gently used clothing, shoes, purses and household linens like towels and sheets should be donated for reuse rather than put into the trash.
Compost
Commercial compost companies and some municipalities also offer alternatives to compost food or yard waste.

Yard Waste
Most municipalities are collecting yard waste curbside i.e. leaves and tree limbs (limbs no longer than 4 ft. long and no stumps) and making compost. Please contact your municipality for possible curbside collection or if there is a drop-off and compost available.
