The Challenge

  • A private real estate investment firm based in Boston with a primary focus on commercial office properties throughout the US and Europe
  • In 2010, Beacon implemented a company-wide solid waste and recycling management program designed to achieve a significant increase in recycling at its properties
  • Four office buildings in McLean, Virginia were chosen to pilot the recycling programs prior to expansion across the entire portfolio

 The Solution

  • Partnered with Casella to implement new solid waste and recycling programs to help increase recycling and waste diversion, as well as provide training and management services
  • Collaborated with on-site property management team to implement new collection practices and container right-sizing
  • Instituted Zero-Sort® Recycling, simplifying collection and transportation of materials to the proper containers

The Results

  • Services for all 4 buildings combined, eliminating container redundancy and dramatically reducing the amount of resources necessary, creating savings of over 45% per month
  • Zero-Sort program well received by Beacon, their tenants, and housekeeping staff
  • Completed LEED Audits, provided tenant training, increased environmental awareness and participation, and provided E-Waste and Universal Waste recycling programs
  • Recycling rapidly expanded well beyond the initial pilot program. Today, Casella currently provides services to over 25 Beacon properties
