What We Do

RECYCLING

Recycling provides an example of the collaboration involved in successful and sustainable material management. Households and businesses do their part to separate recyclable materials from their trash. We do our part to collect, sort, and process them into high-quality raw materials for manufacturers to use in new products. We also serve as public advocates for the advancement of materials manufacturing and recovery. Recycling works best when we all play our parts well.

Partnering to Recycle Better™

Earlier this year, Casella’s Westbrook hauling division partnered with the Biddeford Public Works Department to reduce residents’ recycling contamination. Over a three week span, the group tagged over 5,000 bins, bringing the contamination rate down from over 24 percent to 12 percent. In addition to tagging, our team analyzed census data on the City of Biddeford to better understand what factors might be posing a barrier to better recycling, and created specialized educational resources as a result.

Road to Success

What began as a temporary work opportunity, has turned into a rapidly developing career path for Casella’s Sanford, ME commercial driver Debra West. In 2022, Debra celebrated her first full year with the company and became the one-hundredth graduate of the Casella CDL Training Program, an interactive, debt-free training opportunity that provides the skills and knowledge needed to obtain a CDL licensure. With the support of her colleagues and the wide range of operations and management training available through Casella, Debra is one step closer to her managerial aspirations.

Community Impact

In an effort to keep local islands and waterways safe, clean, and enjoyable for all, our Casella team recently joined the Maine Island Trail Association for a cleanup event at Saco Bay. The group pulled off and properly disposed of over 150 damaged lobster traps from areas heavily utilized by recreational boaters of all types.

Sustainable Innovation

The Casella ‘Recycle Better’ App is currently available in seven communities with 25,000 households accessing it in the Southern Maine market. Implementation began with Kennebunk, Maine in March 2023 and since then we have delivered 1,113 reminders which include notifications for scheduled services, schedule changes, and service alerts. In addition, 3,619 materials have been searched through the Waste Wizard feature, designed to educate customers on how to properly handle specific items.

World Finance Sustainability Award

World Finance Magazine annually honors companies across a dozen categories ranging from Insurance and Banking to Corporate Governance. Recently, as the issue of climate change rose to the top of the global agenda and businesses across the globe began to take real action to tackle climate change, World Finance introduced its inaugural Sustainability Awards, to honor companies that show a commitment to environmentalism and sustainability and are making the business world a much greener place. Casella is the first vertically integrated solid waste, recycling, and resource management services company to earn the award in the Waste Management Category.
