What We Do

RECYCLING

Recycling provides an example of the collaboration involved in successful and sustainable material management. Households and businesses do their part to separate recyclable materials from their trash. We do our part to collect, sort, and process them into high-quality raw materials for manufacturers to use in new products. We also serve as public advocates for the advancement of materials manufacturing and recovery. Recycling works best when we all play our parts well.

Recycling Robots

For more than 45 years Casella has been committed to giving resources new life. From establishing the first recycling facility in Vermont in 1977 to the recent installation of robotic sorting guided by artificial intelligence at the Rutland, VT Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in 2022, one goal remains the same: recycle more and Recycle Better™. Designed to reduce contamination in the recycling system and support the current labor force, the launch of Casella’s AMP Robotics pilot was made possible through grant funding support from The Recycling Partnership and further demonstrated the capabilities and positive environmental impacts of innovative recycling.

Community Impact

In the aftermath of catastrophic flooding, Casella employees were called into action, providing critical cleanup infrastructure to help maintain public health and environmental safety throughout the State of Vermont. To support those in need, Casella established the Casella Relief Fund, in partnership with the United Way of Rutland County (UWRC), designed to help offset the expenses of those in the community impacted. The fund reached a $100,000 milestone within weeks of creation.

Sustainable Innovation

Casella introduced the first electric refuse vehicle in the State of Vermont. The Mack LR Electric will be used on residential routes in the Rutland Region and was partially made possible when Casella successfully secured grant funding through the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation’s Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust. Casella believes that Vermont will provide the right proving ground for the pilot program, testing against the mountainous terrain and cold winters.
